Roadmap

What is being worked on, what is next, what is being thought about, and what has been decided against. Nothing here has a date on it — a one-person roadmap with dates is a promise broken in public.

Now

The known rough edges currently being worked on.

Table borders can lose exact widths

Editing a .docx with complex tables can shift some border widths and cell backgrounds on save. Verso preserves the original values where it can, but AppKit's text system sometimes overrides them.

HTML import is best-effort

HTML opens through macOS's own conversion. Simple pages come in cleanly; complex layouts, custom CSS and JavaScript-heavy pages will not render faithfully.

Right-to-left support is partial

Arabic and Hebrew read correctly, but paragraph direction and mixed-direction editing still need work. The interface is localised into sixteen languages; the text engine has not caught up with all of them.

Next

Each of these is the missing half of something that already ships. Finishing what exists beats starting what does not, and it makes this list checkable against the app rather than aspirational.

Reordering styles

The Styles panel lists, applies, renames and deletes styles, but the order is fixed. Dragging them into your own order is the piece still missing.

Leaders on the ruler itself

1.0.38 gave the ruler the pointer: stops drag, drag off to delete, a guide line runs down the page and markers snap to the paragraphs around them. Setting a leader is still a trip to the Tabs panel, and it is now the one thing Nisus Writer's ruler does that ours does not.

Banded columns for tables

Table styles cover striped rows, bold headers and several grid weights. Banded columns are the one preset still missing.

Later

Wanted and agreed, not started. No order implied within the list.

Compare documents

Open two versions side by side and see what changed between them.

Custom page sizes

Dimensions beyond the Letter, A4 and Legal presets, for anyone setting a book or an unusual format.

Anchored shape and image layout

Floating images already wrap text and move between pages. The remaining work is Word's full anchored layout model, so complex documents round-trip exactly.

Keyboard control of the ruler

Select a tab stop and nudge it with the arrow keys, the way Nisus Writer does. Most word processors cannot do this at all, which is a poor reason for us not to.

Bookmarks and cross-references

Internal references that update themselves when the thing they point at moves.

More spell-check languages

The interface is in sixteen languages; the dictionaries are not.

Not planned

Things people reasonably ask for and will not get. This is the section that earns the other three: a roadmap where everything is eventually coming is not a roadmap, it is a wish.

A binder, or project management

A workspace for switching between projects, the way Scrivener and Ulysses do it. Verso is a document editor: it opens a file, you write, it saves that same file, and your folders stay the place your work lives. If you want a binder for a long manuscript, Scrivener is genuinely better at it and we would rather say so. If what you actually want is your writing to live as a connected set of notes rather than one long document, that is Skein, which we also make and which is free.

Cloud sync and collaboration

No accounts, no servers, no real-time co-authoring. Your documents stay on your Mac. A deliberate limit rather than a missing feature.

iPhone and iPad versions

Verso is a Mac app and will stay one, so the Mac version keeps the attention.

A plugin or macro system

Extensibility adds surface area for bugs and a support burden to match. A smaller app that works reliably is the better trade.

Recently shipped

The last three. This list is generated from the release notes, so it cannot fall behind the app.

1.0.43

Your citations survive the file, and headers and footers are finally complete.

1.0.42

More saving fixes, for the person who formats without typing.

1.0.40

Saving is fixed. If Save appeared to do nothing after you reopened a document, it works.

This order is not fixed. Something a reader actually needs beats something on the list, and several of the entries above arrived that way — tell me what is missing.
